Privacy in plain language

This page describes how the current explorer handles saved areas and the requests needed to display public satellite observations.

Saved areas stay in this browser

When you save an area, its name, coordinates and radius are stored in this browser’s local storage. The saved-place list is not an account or a notification service. It does not sync across devices.

You can rename or remove saved places in the explorer. Browser settings can also clear local storage. Storage may be unavailable in some browser configurations. Opening a saved area sends its search coordinates and radius to the app’s API, as described below.

Area and filter requests

The explorer sends your selected area, time window, detection confidence and live or replay mode to this app’s API as URL request parameters. A custom area includes latitude, longitude and radius. Opening a saved custom area uses those same parameters; the API request does not include your saved-place name.

The app uses these parameters to select matching observations from a public NASA FIRMS dataset. The server retrieves a fixed public source file; it does not pass your custom search parameters to NASA as an area query. JSON feed links include the selected query parameters.

Information needed to serve requests

Serving the app, map file and API responses involves hosting and network request metadata, such as an IP address, requested URL and browser request headers. Custom coordinates and filters form part of the requested API URL.

Briefing and CSV downloads are prepared in your browser from the retrieved response. The current app adds no advertising scripts or analytics trackers.

Links to other websites

Links to NASA FIRMS, NASA documentation and Natural Earth take you to external websites. Their handling of requests and personal information is governed by those destinations’ policies.
