Exploring Brazil hotspots

Start with a broad circular selection, focus on a specific place, and keep satellite observations separate from claims about cause or land change.

Understand the preset before quoting a count

The Brazil preset is a 2,200 km radius circle centered at −10.8, −53 (latitude, longitude in decimal degrees). It is not a polygon covering the whole country and is not an Amazon-only selection. It can include observations outside Brazil while omitting places within Brazil.

Focus on a place and its source dates

  1. Replace the broad circle with a local question. Choose Custom area, enter the location’s latitude and longitude, and use a smaller radius. Zooming the map alone does not change the filter or the count.
  2. Choose an observation window. Use 6, 12 or 24 hours and inspect the UTC acquisition times. Last fetched tells you when the file arrived at the app; it does not date each detection.
  3. Preserve the selection when comparing. Note the center, radius, UTC window, sensor and confidence filter. Check the source observation range and data state in each view. Different windows, sensors or coverage can produce different counts without establishing a trend.
  4. Keep exports qualified. The map, list and CSV share up to the newest 1,000 matches from one Suomi NPP VIIRS file. Read the plotted and matched totals and any rejected-row notice. A broad selection can exceed this display limit; a narrower circle helps focus the subset.

A thermal anomaly does not explain its cause

A detection alone does not establish ignition cause, land use, affected area or deforestation. Neither an FRP measurement nor a confidence category supplies that missing context. Repeated points do not necessarily represent separate events, and missing points do not establish an absence of fire.

Use the satellite hotspot reading guide for the meaning of the source fields and the limits of counts.

Use INPE as a separate official reference

Visit INPE Programa Queimadas for its official context and resources. Check the dates, geographic selection and product definitions shown there before comparing them with this app.

WildfireAgent.si does not retrieve or combine live INPE data. Its counts come from the selected NASA FIRMS file, so they should not be relabelled as INPE totals or used alone to infer seasonal change or deforestation.

For this app’s issuing source, use the NASA FIRMS viewer and current official downloads and source notices.
